Laurel's Submission

Joelle's Submission

"Submit"
Prismacolor pencils on student quality 8 1/2" x 11" paper.
I start with the lightest shades, sketching lightly as the image unveils itself, building up to the darkest and brightest.
Submission can be entering a piece in a show, and so I could do with this drawing, but when I received the theme I immediately thought of the humiliation of submission to a superior power.

Marilyn's Submission

' After Confession '
I went back to the assemblage for Submission. I was raised Catholic, and that shows up in so much of my art. I love all the icons and symbols. I call this piece "After Confession". Last Saturday I found an old little prayer book of mine and it called to me as "submission" – all that kneeling in church and receiving penance and being in trouble for the least little thing. I began with a deep red canvas and added a butterfly to represent the feeling of flight after confessing all the bad ass sins. Oh my God I'm heartily sorry for having offended thee.... The little tag on the rosary says, “Blessed by Supreme Chaplain”. How special.

Marilyn's Under the Bed
I went off in a whole other direction. After creating a pencil drawing , I began to play. I found this bizarre little catalog of Halloween costumes, and there she was! Little Marie Antoinette. Then I put a little guillotine on top...and Voila! Marie's Head Under My Bed.
